Don’t go to work, stay put to work.

August 22 2012

The latest numbers from Statistics New Zealand showed that over 20% of people had worked from home at least once in the last four weeks. In America the figure is even higher.

With the current technology available to us – wireless internet, instant messaging, web conferencing, collaboration software, etc – working from home is becoming a viable alternative to the daily commute to the office. This is a wonderful development for anyone who’s ever been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic at seven in the morning.

So how can you set up your business so that you can run it away from the office?

It’s easy to do. Whatever you need to get done, there is undoubtedly a free or cheap online application out there to help streamline the process. Programs such as Google Docs and Zoho use cloud technology to allow people to work on the same master document from anywhere in the world. Instant messaging services such as Campfire – which was developed specifically for businesses – make it possible to fire comments back and forth with distant employees and clients, without them having to download and install new software.

Got something more heavy duty in mind?

Online project management applications like Basecamp, and many others, are great for virtual teams collaborating on large projects. These kinds of software offer a central hub where you and your clients can log in, manage task lists, track billable hours, share files, and have conversations on a per-issue basis.

If this all sounds a bit overwhelming, give us a call at The Design Council. We know our stuff and we’d be happy to help you get on your way.
